Accident prone Koparkhairane Station - Subway turning point

May 13, 2010

Almost once a week, the screeching sound of some or the other vehicle makes me rush to the window. Residents who stay near Koparkhairane station are now used to the sight of this scenario. The subway and the station road (DMart side) meet at a point where vehicles pour in from all directions making it tough for those driving into the area for the first time and for the daily pedestrians. Worst, the street lights aren't operational!

The accident at Koparkhairane: On Wednesday (12th May 2010), it was very late in the night and I heard this loud screeching sound. I rushed to the window and was shocked. It appeared that a car had bumped into a bike (am not 100% sure since the street lights were not working). The person driving the car did not run away but stopped it a few feet away. It was clear that he wanted to come out and help the biker who was thrown away and was lying on the road, perhaps unconscious. But as is the case always, within a few seconds crowd gathered - many men, most of them medium / strong built. I noticed the car driver open the door of his car twice and turn behind to step out, but the crowd looked furious and he stayed inside. He did not hit and run. Now the crowd started creating a scene. It took them a few minutes to rush the victim to the hospital. They had to remove their frustration on the car driver first!!!

They approached the car driver and soon it was this man completely inescapably surrounded by around 12-15 men. He appeared to be pleading but then one person slapped him hard and you know what follows in such situations. At that moment I so wished I was a strong-built man who could have helped scatter the crowd, helped the victim reach the hospital and the driver reach the police station (as was obvious he would have wanted to coz he waited all the while). But I was certain I could have done nothing going downstairs among the crazy crowd. I did what little I could to help out the driver with the number of the Koparkhairane police station saved on my mobile. I trust the Koparkhairane police completely and as expected they reached the site in 2 minutes and handled the situation perfectly!

What alarmed me was this:

  1. People first go after the person 'responsible' for the accident instead of ensuring that the victim gets medical attention at the earliest.
  2. People start hitting the person 'responsible' for the accident even when he pleads guilty, tries to help, does not escape. Shouldn't they just note the number of the car if they want to and take the person to the police station, which in this case it was clear he was not the 'hit-and-run' type!
  3. Why don't they simply call up the police if they really care. Or allow the person to take the victim to the hospital if he wants to?
  4. How do people come to the conclusion about who's fault it was in the first case?
  5. Still the street lights aren't operational. And I really don't know what do about it.
I hope the victim is safe and sound. And I wonder what a person should do if his car accidentally hits someone. If he stays back and tries to help, people start hitting him. If he tries to move out, even to reach the police station, it becomes a hit-and-run thing. Damn I don't ever want to drive!

Have you come across such a situation? What is the best thing to do in such situations?
